Changing partners: toward a macrostructural-opportunity theory of marital dissolution

Article Abstract:

This article examines the demographic aspects of divorce, focusing on how marital dissolution is influenced by local marriage markets and the availability of alternatives to the current spouse. Findings suggest that large marriage markets correspond to higher rates of divorce, as well as when a wife works in a profession that has a higher proportional number of men.
