Commitment processes in accounts of the development of premarital relationships

Article Abstract:

A study examined the subjective processes by which 113 premarital couples became more or less committed to wed. Findings revealed two commitment processes: relationship-driven commitments and event-driven commitments. The former involves the smooth evolution of commitment with few reversals while the latter is described by sudden downturns which alternate with sudden upturns. More negative relationship experiences and less compatibility were reported by event-driven partners than by relationship-driven partners. Nevertheless, no significant difference in terms of love or other indicators of involvement between the two groups was found.
