Helping between parents and young adult offspring: the role of parental marital quality, divorce, and remarriage

Article Abstract:

The effects of parental marital quality, divorce and remarriage on interdependence between children and parents were analyzed. Low marital quality decreased children's reliance on parents. Divorce, on the other hand, lowered interdependence between fathers and children but not between mothers and children. Remarried mothers were as helpful as first-married mothers but received less assistance from their children.

A prospective study of divorce and parent-child relationships

Article Abstract:

Poor relationship between parents and children can be the outcome of strained relations in marriage, prior to divorce. Several problems, considered to be the outcome of divorce, exist prior to marital separation. While relations between children and noncustodial parents decrease with time, relations between children and their custodial parents also cause tensions. The significance of divorce is greater for fathers than for mothers, which explains the unique nature of fathers' affection to children.
