Context and surrogate parenting among contemporary grandparents

Article Abstract:

Researchers have generally disregarded the growing phenomenon of surrogate parenting by grandparents. Important elements that need attention include the influence of temporal, developmental and ethnic or racial contexts on how grandparents negotiate and perform their role. Factors contributing to the greater number of grandparents as surrogate parents have received, include declining mortality, demographic trends such as parental joblessness and divorce and family circumstances such as the addiction of young parents.

The family in Jewish tradition

Article Abstract:

An analysis of the family in the Jewish tradition indicates that several basic structures and functions of the Jewish family have never been changed or challenged until the 19th century. It is also shown that concepts and laws of the Jewish family before the 19th century were as old as Biblical times. Changes in Israel's family laws since the 19th century were brought about by factors such as changes in the status of women and the family and the influence of western societies.

Lithuania: the case of young "socialist families in the context of rapid socialization

Article Abstract:

A sociological research was conducted in Vilnius, Lithuania, between 1984 and 1985 to investigate how young families are affected by the rapid social innovation in the country. The two-stage study involved interviews with 220 couples before marriage and with 200 couples after the first year of marriage. Results showed that Lithuanian young families highly regard the value of marriage and take into account family life in evaluating personal needs.
