Does family structure matter?: a comparison of adoptive, two-parent biological, single-mother, stepfather, and stepmother households

Article Abstract:

Information from the National Survey of Families and Households is used to compare family relationship quality in adoptive, single-mother, two-parent biological, stepmother, and stepfather households. Particular emphasis is placed on adoptive family structures, and implications for adoption policies and theory are addressed.

Race differences in family experience and early sexual initiation: dynamic models of family structure and family change

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns how family structure influences the age of first sexual intercourse for unmarried girls. The effects of parental presence, family change, absence of a biological father, and a single-mother household are all considered with regard to the experiences of Black and White women.

Family structure and children's behavioral and cognitive outcomes

Article Abstract:

Research presented concerns the behavioral and cognitive impacts of various family structures on children aged 7-10. Findings suggest that children's behavior and cognition is influenced by the psychological functioning of the mother, family income, and the home environment.
