Factor structure and predictive validity of questionnaire reports on family problem solving

Article Abstract:

Researchers investigated family problem solving in 55 families of Pacific Island American and Asian American origin. The research involved a questionnaire approach to family members. It revealed that family members assess problem-solving according to their perceptual viewpoint rather than any other criterion, and that the validity of problem-solving ratings as outcome predictors is dependent upon the family role, with, for example, youths' ratings being associated with their self-esteem. Results suggest that investigations into family problem-solving should focus on individual members' perceptions.

Family, religiosity, and the risk of adolescent drug use

Article Abstract:

Structural equation modeling was employed to determine how mother-teenager bonding, father-teenager bonding, parental monitoring, family conflict, family drug problems and religiosity are connected to teenage drug abuse. A questionnaire sampling method was used for a random sample of 13,250 teenagers. Findings revealed that mother-teenager bonding and family drug problems have only slight contributions to teenage drug use. Father-teenage bonding, parental monitoring and family conflict have comparatively smaller effects.

Neighborhood and family contexts of adolescent sexual activity

Article Abstract:

The influences of neighborhood and family contexts on the move to first sex were examined using a community-based sample of 870 adolescents in Los Angeles. The risk of sex was not due solely to neighborhood socioeconomic status and race, but social conditions were found to covary with these structural attributes. Teens from single-parent or reconstituted families and those who report high levels of parental overcontrol, have higher risks.
