Gender and fairness: marital satisfaction in two-earner couples

Article Abstract:

The effect of the family division of labor on marital satisfaction among dual-income couples was investigated. Data from 382 two-earner married couples were analyzed to determine whether value preferences for the balance of power, gender division and perceptions of empathy and equity affect the relationship between division of labor and marital satisfaction. Results showed that conventional division of both paid and domestic work has positive and negative effects on marital satisfaction and that undervaluing the spouse's contributions reduces marital satisfaction.
