Noncustodial mothers following divorce

Article Abstract:

Noncustodial mothers face social censure and guilt because of the belief that a mother should care for her children and yet there are between 500,000 and 1,200,000 US noncustodial mothers. Seventy-five percent of US noncustodial mothers voluntarily gave up their children, usually because of emotional problems, financial difficulties, legal threats or a destructive spousal relationship. In a survey of 130 noncustodial mothers, most would have kept their children if not for outside problems, a factor that is ignored by most family research.

Body size beliefs and weight concerns among mothers and their adolescent children

Article Abstract:

Mother/daughter pairs elicited higher correlations in estimating body mass index and choosing current size than their mother/son counterparts. Accurateness was noted among African American and White mother/daughter pairs with regards to their selection of similar silhouettes for girls' and mothers' current body sizes. On the other hand, White mother/son pairs exhibited weakness in selecting boys' and mothers' current body sizes.

Computer intervention for adolescent children of divorce

Article Abstract:

An educational computer divorce adjustment program has proven to be successful in increasing understanding and communication between parents and teenagers and a decrease in conflicts related to the process of divorce. The efficacy of this computer program indicates its value as a complement to counseling programs for families undergoing divorce, thus aiding in promoting a healthy adjustment for adolescents and parents.
