Optimism, appraisals, and coping in the adjustment of mothers and their children with spina bifida

Article Abstract:

The study to examine the relationship among optimism, primary and secondary appraisals of and coping with child-related stressor, maternal psychological adjustment, and children adjustment in 29 families with a child with spina bifida, suggests the usefulness of service providers to help parents change their perceptions of stressful child-related situations regarding well-being to the child instead of their perceptions of personal threat. Threats self-esteem may be reduced by interventions which approach parents as members of the intervention team.
