Predicting interpersonal competence in young adulthood: the roles of family, self, and peer systems during adolescence

Article Abstract:

Interpersonal competence is the ability of a person to relate with other people. A study is conducted to determine the effects of family, self and peer systems during adolescence on the development of interpersonal competence in young adulthood. The results show that low self-esteem can be predicted by high incidence of interparental conflict and parental divorce. Poor self-esteem is found to be an indicator of poor peer-adolescent relationships which, in turn, can predict poor interpersonal competence in adulthood.

Parenting self-efficacy of HIV-infected mothers: The role of social support

Article Abstract:

Parenting self-efficacy is an important part of parenting competence. The differences in parenting self-efficacy and the relationship of social support to parenting self-efficacy for HIV-infected and uninfected mothers are examined. Results suggest that HIV-infected mothers reported less parenting self-efficacy than non-infected mothers. HIV status also resulted in differing relationships between social support and parenting self-efficacy.

Parent-adolescent congruence on decision-making and its relation to adolescent adjustment

Article Abstract:

Research on parent-adolescent agreement and disagreement over issues and their effect on adolescent adjustment is examined. Agreement between father and adolescent was found to have significant influence on adolescent adjustment, contradicting past research that correlated mother-adolescent agreement with conflict during teenage years. Agreement between mother and father was not found to have any influence on adolescent functioning.
