Assessing interparental conflict: Reports of parents and adolescents in European American and Mexican American families

Article Abstract:

Interparental conflict can have stronger and longer-lasting detrimental effects on children and adolescents, than parental divorce. An assessment of interparental conflict focused on six major issues identified as potentially having the most detrimental effects on children and adolescents, frequency, child-related content, intensity, conflict behavior, child involvement and resolution, in European American and Mexican American families. The Multidimensional Assessment of Interparental Conflict Scale (MAIC) addresses the limitations of other self-report measures and could advance research in family relationships.

Family caregiving systems: models, resources, and values

Article Abstract:

Interviews of adult offspring of both genders of 31 mentally impaired mothers revealed the existence of primary caregiving, partnership and team work in caring for mentally disabled parents. Primary caregiving is mostly done by singular offspring deeply involved with their parents, while partnership in caregiving involves at least two children, mostly of the same gender, in protecting their afflicted parents. Team work is mostly an effort by offspring to assure care for the afflicted parents, while protecting themselves from any harm.
