Satisfaction with parenting: the role of marital happiness, family structure, and parents' gender

Article Abstract:

A parenting satisfaction model is presented, which was developed based on interviews with 1,200 parents conducted throughout the US from 1988-1992. This model demonstrates that parenting satisfaction is primarily influenced by three factors, namely marital happiness, marital structure and parents' gender. Through the use of cross sectional analyses, it was revealed that parenting satisfaction is higher for married parents who have good marital relationships, for parents who have their biological children under their care and for mothers.

Mothers' work hours and marital quality: variations by family structure and family size

Article Abstract:

A survey of employed mothers shows that their marital quality varies with the type and size of the family. In continuously married families, the increase of children brings less marital happiness and increases marital conflict. In mother-stepfather families, increase of family size brings more happiness and lessens conflict. The relationship of maternal employment and marital quality is interpreted through the perspectives of role strain, incomplete institutionalization of remarriage, marriage market, and distributive justice.
