Scientific norms and research publication: issues and professional ethics

Article Abstract:

The publish or perish environment in most academic institutions undermines scientific research's value by promoting quantity over quality and by tying publication to raises and advancement. The traditional scientific standards are often bypassed by professors who are pressured to publish while their work is rarely double checked through replication because original work is more prestigious. The pressure to publish undermines professors' scientific ethics while at the same time providing disincentives for traditional social control mechanisms. Therefore, systematic reform is necessary.

Issues of technology's possible futures

Article Abstract:

Modern technology depends on scientific advances for their development and application. Since technology tends to take on a life of its own or become institutionalized, questions must be asked about the way preexisting values structure the development of technology and limit the realm of expected applications. Reproductive technologies, life-saving technologies and how technology affects child care and education positively or negatively are discussed in this light.
