Social bonding and the cessation of partner violence across generations

Article Abstract:

The relationship between violent family histories and violence or nonviolence in adult intimate relations was analyzed. The analysis was based on Hirschi's social bonding theory. Results showed that men who developed strong bonds with their significant others and who were aware of the negative impact of violence on their relationship with their significant others were more likely to become nonviolent toward their partners. This indicates that social bonding is more influential than violent family heritage.
