Speaking in code

Article Abstract:

Command-driven typesetting software programs provide a higher level of flexibility and control than mouse-driven programs. They are, however, expensive and geared to suit professional needs, but offer more than 200 commands for controlling design attributes. The use of a keyboard provides for quicker formatting than with a mouse, and further comparison shows that code-driven software allows more control because the user can numerically specify layout dimensions, change global parameters for a specific page or paragraph and access more fonts. Command-driven programs also offer automatic hyphenation, quick and easy text editing, conditionals for use with vertical justification, a preview mode for command verification, the use of macros and special features, such as automatic space insertion.

The coincidence of depression and high ability in delinquent youth

Article Abstract:

A new study investigates the coincidence of high ability and depression in 207 juveniles committed to a youth detention facility. The study, which uses the Children's Depression Inventory and the Raven's Advanced Progressive Matrices Analysis, shows that the number of high ability juveniles in detention is comparable with the number expected in a normal population and reveals a significant link between high ability and depression. The findings suggest that screening for depression should be compulsory for committed delinquents.
