Gloria's despair: struggling against the odds

Article Abstract:

A 32-year-old depressed woman with a history of physical and emotional abuse was referred to a psychiatric clinic following hospitalization due to a suicide attempt. The woman's symptoms of depression improved with medication at the hospital. However, she relapsed after she ceased taking medication following discharge. Moreover, she remained feeling isolated, hopeless and unlucky. The treatment team's failure to provide concrete supports in order to establish basic safety as well as provide help to reaffirm the meaning of her life were among the reasons why the patient's recovery was incomplete.
