The effects of work history and timing of marriage on the division of household labor: a life-course perspective

Article Abstract:

Work history and marital timing influences the amount of time spent by husbands and wives in household work. The National Survey of Families and Households shows that the timing of the current jobs and employment history strongly affects the time spent in household activities by first married couples. In families where the wives go out to work, the husbands do the housework which is generally meant for the women and vice versa. Women's employment history has an effect on the type of work chosen which indirectly influences their contribution to the housework.

Employment status, psychological well-being, social support, and physical practices of single Black mothers

Article Abstract:

The influences of depressive symptomatology, parental stress and instrumental support on spanking practices of single Black mothers were investigated. Findings indicated no connections between employment status and the number of spankings. However, employment has significance for its restraining effects on the connection between mothers' psychological functioning and their decisions to apply physical discipline.

When she brings home the bacon: Labor-force participation and the risk of spousal violence against women

Article Abstract:

The treatment of employment as a symbolic, rather than a socioeconomic resource is examined, looking at the link between participation in the labor force and the risk of spousal violence against women. The results show that the effect of woman's employment on her risk of spousal violence depends on the employment status of her partner.
