The importance of child-care characteristics to choice of care

Article Abstract:

A study reveals the importance of intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics of child-care in the parents' choice of care. Parents prefer centre care where the focus is on the developmental aspects of care-care. However, parents prefer home-care for the child when factors, such as hours, location, costs of care, and the child's closeness to the caregiver are prioritized. The mother's education also shapes child-care choices as it largely influences the importance that parents attach to diverse characteristics of care.

Welfare background, attitudes, and employment among new mothers

Article Abstract:

The effect of intergenerational welfare culture on the employment probability of new mothers was examined by analyzing data from the National Longitudinal Survey of Youth using ordinary least squares and logit regression. The results revealed that new mothers have a lesser probability of having positive work attitudes, but were more determined to use welfare. The results further indicated that employment chances for new mothers are not affected by an intergenerational welfare culture.
