When respect means to obey: immigrant Mexican mothers' values for their children

Article Abstract:

A study of Mexican immigrant mothers investigates their parental values and their attitudes towards childrearing. The study of 15 mothers, most of whom had a low educational attainment, shows that many elements of their schemas are found in other cultures and contrast with current professional models. Generally, children were seen as inactive learners whose ability to understand depended upon parental instruction and developed slowly over a number of years.

Cuban mothers' schemas of ADHD: development, characteristics, and help seeking behavior

Article Abstract:

Parents play a pivotal role in the diagnosis/treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Their schemas (or perceptions/beliefs of the basic nature of things based on cognitive codifications of experiences) play an important part in recognizing ADHD in their children. A study was conducted on Cuban mothers of seven- to 10-year-old children with ADHD. The findings hold important implications for clinical practice and are discussed.
