Herdsmen of Chinese Turkestan
Article Abstract:
Governmental activities and the free market economies have adversely affected the herdsmen of Xinjiang, formerly known as Chinese Turkestan. The break up of the Soviet Union and opening up of China have caused a fast trade growth in Xinjiang. However, this change is confined only to the towns and the cities. The Uyghur and the Kazakh are the dominant, pastoral tribes of the region. The Kazakh are nomadic people, who travel long distances in search of pastures. Kirghiz nomads in the Pamirs are a smaller group.
