Issues are presented concerning the Pinot Noir, Zinfandel, Sauvignon Blanc and Syrah varieties of grape which are grown in California and the wines produced from them. A selection of the best wines made from these grapes is recommended.

A critique of Californian Chardonnays is offered. The methods of producing certain wines using oak chips are criticized and a white Burgundy wine, Le Montrachet, is offered as inspiration to wine makers and drinkers.

Over 500 wines are rated on a scale of one to 100, with tasting notes provided for the best 1994 Chardonnays, the best buys and the best vintages. A Beringer Napa Valley Private Reserve at $20 is rated 95. An alphabetical listing is also provided.
