Austria's accession lowers food prices for consumers

Article Abstract:

Austria has joined the European Union (EU) which has meant lower food prices in the shops, but dairies are hit by low milk prices. Food retailers have cut prices for a number of foodstuffs. Dairies are paying less to farmers since they receive less from retailers, and there is concern that retailers may seek to rase prices and use cheaper imports. Beer prices have not fallen, although brewers can pay less for their raw materials. Savings made in this way are likely to be invested in advertising.
