California competitors join in search for cork alternative

Article Abstract:

Major California wineries, such as Sebastiani, Kendall-Jackson, Clos du Bois, Robert Mondavi and Beringer, and other investors from the private sector have provided more than $2 million worth of capital to finance Neocork Technologies Inc.'s efforts to develop an alternative for corks used in wine bottles. The joint venture is in latter phases of its research and development initiative for potential cork substitute neocork, which is manufactured from polymers endorsed by the Food and Drug Administration, and is in the process of developing stoppers for sparkling-wine bottles.

The great cork debate

Article Abstract:

A comparison between the virtues of cork with the advantages of alternative closures for wine bottles is presented. While the advocate of cork emphasizes its traditional values and presents environmental considerations to support his argument, the opponent points to the defectiveness of most corks, and their inability to preserve the longtime quality of wines.
