Azucarera-Ebro merger finished but site closures delayed

Article Abstract:

AEA, created from the merger of Azucarera and Ebro Agricolas, will be the largest sugar producer in Spain. It had been planned to close facilities in Veguellina, Spain, and Venta de Banos, Spain, as part of the merger. However, this move has been opposed by one of the new company's main group of shareholders, and will therefore be delayed. If the closure of the two sites is eventually agreed, overall investment by AEA in seven facilities in the Castilla y Leon region will be around Pta14.9 billion in the period to 2001.

Ebro/Azucarera merger put back on track by Spanish authorities

Article Abstract:

Spanish state-owned concern Alycesa has purchased part of the 34.4% stake held by the Kuwait Investment Office in sugar concern Ebro Agricolas. This means that the planned merger between Ebro and fellow sugar manufacturer Azucarera may now go ahead after all. Alycesa has already sold 9.2% of Ebro's shares to Caja de Castilla y Leon, a savings bank, and a further 5% to rice concern Arrocerias Herba. It now seems likely that the merger of Ebro and Azucarera will take place in Mar 1998.
