Economic prosperity in Spain has slowed in 1997 following accelerated growth when the country was accepted into the European Economic Community in 1986. The country's unemployment jumped to 25% and growth of gross domestic product plummeted to -1.2% in 1993 as multinational firms balked at restrictive labor laws and started shutting down their Spanish plants. Almost 95% of Spain's lawmakers voted for an Aug 1997 landmark labor reform accord offering employers more flexibility in hiring.

Researcher Gary Strobel's experiments on bacteria have yielded two drugs that help treat the fungal infections thrush and Cryptococcus. Now, he has discovered an alternative source of the cancer-fighting drug taxol in the fungus Pestalotiopsis, which grows symbiotically on Pacific yew trees.
