Food industry urged to prepare for Millenium Bug

Article Abstract:

UK food companies are being urged by the Institute of Grocery Distribution (IGD) to prepare for the threat of the Millenium computer bug, which could cause havoc when computers fail to recognize the year 2000. The IGD has launched its Initiative 2000 aimed at ensuring that the computer systems of every UK food company are year 2000 compliant. Research commissioned by the IGD shows that Millenium Bug awareness is lower in Continental Europe than it is in the UK, the US and Scandinavia, while 44% of companies have no formal year 2000 compliance program in place.

Food manufacturers fear rising power of retailers

Article Abstract:

A yearly survey of the UK food industry shows that 74% of food producers are afraid of the increasing power of retailers. The survey of 250 companies by KPMG reveals that many manufacturers are forming alliances with suppliers and customers to develop new products and reduce costs. A lack of knowledge of Efficient Consumer Response among the companies is seen as one area on which manufacturers can focus to reinforce their positions. The companies surveyed saw fewer chances for restructuring in the future.

Food activists launch campaign for new US food safety agency

Article Abstract:

Food and livestock producers, in the US, do not support the possible introdution of a new independent food safety agency. Some of their representatives point out a new agency may not change safety procedures but may only alter the bureaucratic organisation. A study is due to start looking at the food safety structure, during Spring 1998, following several episodes of contaminated food. Many consumer groups are supporting the creation of the Food Safety Administration.
