From water to wine: former marine engineer Orville Magoon dreams of matching Lafite at his vast estate in California's Guenoc Valley

Orville Magoon, who owns Guenoc Estate Vineyards and Winery, has been making wine since the mid-1970s. The 69-year-old vintner is passionate about wine, and the winery has put out some outstanding reds. His 1991 Cabernet Sauvignon merits a rating of 94 on a scale of one to 100.

Nancy and Dick Ponzi make outstanding Pinot Noir at their Willamette Valley winery, where they have lived and worked since 1969. The couple were instrumental in founding the wine Oregon wine region. Six of their current releases are evaluated.
