German purchasing power on the increase

Article Abstract:

German employees had to work an average of 39.0 minutes to pay for a kilogram of pork chops in 1998 - down from 40.6 minutes a year earlier. Overall, food prices in Germany rose less steeply than net wages. In the Lander which make up the former German Democratic Republic food prices rose 0.8%, while the average hourly take-home pay of skilled workers rose 1.7% from DM20.29 to DM20.63 (?? 10.55). However, there were vast differences between the price changes registered in various product segments. Consumer purchasing power rose for pork, beef, poultry, cheese and apples, but declined for butter, fish, potatoes and sausage. Overall food purchasing power is expected to rise in 1999.
