Great dining, Tuscan style

Article Abstract:

Several restaurants and trattorias in Florence, Italy, are rated. The city's Tuscan food is noted for its flavor-packed menus and informal cuisines. The wines bought in Florence restaurants cost much less than the same wine brands ordered in major city restaurants in the US.

Recipes are given for risotto with squash and porcini, fennel-crusted roast pork, braised onions and cantucci. Wines are recommended for each course, and alternate choices are included. A cheese platter is recommended as an accompaniment.

A magic spoonful

Several 'gelateries' line the streets of Florence, Italy. Gelato, Italy's frozen dessert, is technically not an ice cream since it has a low fat content. Egg yolks make the dessert taste rich and the purees give it an intense flavor.
