The most popular Cognacs sold in the US are VS and VSOP. These distinctions are based on aging time. A discussion of how Cognac is made is accompanied by ratings of 34 Cognacs. The favorite VS is a Levrat Fine Cognac at $26, and the favorite VSOP is a Remy Martin at $50 a bottle.

Spanish, California, Italy and other countries are making good brandy. One outstanding one from Spain is a Conde de Osborne Solera Gran Reserva Brandy de Jerez at $40 a bottle. Tasting notes are provided on several brandies.
