Heavy M&A activity expected in west European chocolate sector

Article Abstract:

Western European chocolate manufacturers are aiming to increase their market share by acquisitions, according to a report by Schweizerische Kreditanstalt, a Swiss bank group. Kraft Jacobs Suchard has a 15% share of the European market, and there is potential in both the UK and Ireland for the company to expand its share. Nestle holds one fifth of the European chocolate market, but its share of the German and Scandinavian markets is only 2%.

UK chocolate sales down as consumers avoid sugar

Article Abstract:

Consumption of chocolate confectionery in the UK fell slightly in 1995 due to the hot summer weather and consumers reducing their sugar consumption, according to a survey by Cadbury Schweppes. The leading sugar confectionery brand was Wrigley's Extra sugar free chewing gum and Nestle's Kit-Kat was the top chocolate countiline bar. Nestle Rowntree's Extra was the leading mint brand.

Russian chocolate market shrinks 22.3%

The article reports how the Russian chocolate market fell by 22.3% this year, versus 1998, and that currently, it is at 350 000 tons, compared with 450,000 tons in 1998. The article explains why the market contracted, and how, despite these figures, the Rossiya Confectionery Association is increasing production and plans to launch 14 new products by the end of the year.
