JAPAN: DEMAND FOR SWEETENERS FOR SOFT DRINKS

Article Abstract:

Competition among high intensity sweeteners is expected to increase when Acesulfame K is approved. The aspartame sweetener market was boosted to 200 tonnes as demand rose for use in milky drinks, such as Calpis fruit drinks and for use in near water drinks, and Ajinomoto has cut its prices for aspartame by 30%. The market for steviosides, used in ready to drink coffee and tea beverages, calculated as pure stevioside, has levelled off at about 200 tonnes. The price of sucralose has dropped since its approval, with its rapid climb as a sweetener for desserts and soft drinks that it is now competitive with stevioside and aspartame.
