JAPAN: INSTANT NOODLE SALES UP

Article Abstract:

According to the Japan Instant Food Industry Association, the market of instant noodles which meet Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS) standards sold 4.73bn servings in 1999, up 4%; and the market sold 2.74bn servings of cup noodles, up 7.7%; and it sold 1.82bn servings of dried instant noodles in bags, up 1.3%. However only 163mn servings of LL cup noodles were sold, down 19%. The Japan Agricultural Standard (JAS) approval symbol was displayed on about 91% of all the noodle products - approval by the JAS means that the product may display approval symbol.

JAPAN: ORGANIC FOODS TO EXCEED [yen] 350BN IN 2000

According to Sogo Shijo Kenkyusho, the market research firm, the total organic food market in Japan came to around [yen] 260.4bn in 1998, it will come to around [yen] 341bn in 1999, and to over [yen] 350bn in 2000. In 1998, Japanese organic processed foods represented [yen] 4bn, organic rice [yen] 41.5bn, and organic agricultural produce [yen] 205bn. Imported organic agricultural produce represented [yen] 7.5bn, and imported processed foods [yen] 2.5bn.

JAPAN: NISSIN'S TUNA PASTA IN A CUP

Nissin Food Products has used Italian type pasta, produced using its special technology and high pressure extrusion to produce Nissin SpaO Tuna Mayonnaise in a cup, priced at [yen] 200 for a 170-gram cup. The tuna mayonnaise sauce, designed to produce a salad sensation, contains soy sauce, and comes in a retort pouch. A sachet of sprinkles is included.
