Julius Meinl sale prompts strong reaction

Article Abstract:

Rewe of Germany has purchased 288 Julius Meinl shops and 41 Pam-Pam supermarkets from the Julius Meinl group of Austria. The Pam-Pam chain represented 35% of group sales and profits were declining. Julius Meinl is left with the rights to the Julius Meinl trade name and a luxury store in Vienna, as well as ownership of a bank and coffee and preserves subsidiaries. Rewe will have approximately ECU4.1 billion worth of sales in Austria with the new acquisitions, together with the Billa chain, which is purchased two years ago. It is thought that the Vienna government may block the sale and EU competition authorities may examine the deal.
