Syrah = Shiraz = Petite Sirah?

Article Abstract:

Syrah, Shiraz, and Petite Sirah are all different names for the same grape. The resulting wines, however, are different because of regional variations in the winemaking process. In Australia, the wine known as Shiraz is more rich and upfront than California Syrah. Petite Sirah was once thought unrelated to Syrah, but the grape has now been identified as Syrah. Petite Sirah tends to be less complex than Syrah or Shiraz.

Names to look for

Article Abstract:

The name of the winery is the most important consideration when buying California Syrah, Shiraz, or Petite Sirah. The names Arrowood, Dehlinger, and Joseph Phelps assure experience with Syrah grapes, and Turley Wine Cellars and Markham Vineyards both have fine Petite Sirahs. For Australian-style Shiraz from California, look for Geyser Peak and Simi Shiraz.
