The magnificent 30: Paul Hobbs

Article Abstract:

The Hyde Vineyard in Carneros does equally well with Pinot Noir and Cabernet Sauvignon, grapes that normally require dissimilar growing conditions and Paul Hobbs makes top-notch wines from both varieties in his Sebastopol, Sonoma County, winery. Hobbs employs many of the same winemaking techniques, as do other top Pinot Noir producers, fermenting in small open-top stainless steel containers with indigenous yeasts and bottling the wines unfined and unfiltered.

Napa talent heads to Sierra foothills: Fair Play stakes its claim on Rhone varieties

Article Abstract:

Former Napa Valley winemaker Marco Cappelli is establishing his own winery in Fair Play, an appellation along the Sierra Foothills east of Sacramento in California's Gold Rush Country. He aims to create a distinct blend of Rhone grape varieties in Fair Play, since the decomposed granite soils, high elevation, excellent cold air drainage and cooling available in the region are most suitable for Rhone plantings.

The magnificent 30: Martinelli Winery

Article Abstract:

Lee Martinelli's family has a century's experience of growing grapes in Sonoma, but he admits that farming Pinot is completely different, particular the shift to higher-density plantings demanded by the vintners that buy their grapes. Martinelli began making Pinot under the Martinelli label in 1993 and at their best, Martinelli Pinot Noirs are rich and supple, bursting with berry and cherry flavors.
