A virus out of control
Article Abstract:
AIDS/HIV was first noticed in 1981. The rate of infection has grown from 100,000 people in 1981 to 12.9 million people in 1992. More than 40,000 HIV cases are expected in the US in 1992 and 75,000 new cases were reported in Europe in 1991. The rate of infection in Africa has increased threefold in five years. Asia has shown the greatest rate of increase recently. Women with the virus have increased from 25% in 1990 to 40% in 1992. Estimates conclude that by 2000, between 38 and 110 million adults will be infected and 10 million children.

Pedro Almodovar, Spanish film-maker, and his actors have been responsible for the development of the cinema and Spanish culture, in which there have been many changes since the Franco era. Among a number of budding young stars are Penelope Cruz and Ariadna Gil, who belong to a generation during which the role of men has changed dramatically.
