Development cloaked in emperor's new clothes

Article Abstract:

International aid agencies are failing to meet their own targets in helping the poverty-stricken in third world countries to become empowered and enjoy greater democracy and sex equality via development projects. The agencies use sophisticated jargon to promote projects but are failing in their main business of eradicating poverty. The stance and language of academics and policy-makers are increasingly converging, but the substance is deteriorating. Development studies remain vital in the area of social science research.
