Atherogenic diets enhance endotoxin-stimulated interleukin-1 and tumor necrosis factor gene expression in rabbit aortae

Article Abstract:

The effect of high-cholesterol or high-saturated fat diets on the expression of cytokine genes in the aorta was investigated. Such diets increase adhesion of mononuclear phagocytes to vascular endothelial cells and form fatty lesions similar to the early stages of atherosclerosis, presumably due to the secretion of cytokines. Results suggest that diet-induced changes in the aorta increase local cytokine gene expression in response to a known stimulus. Such possible stimuli could be inflammation, infection, periodic local injury or physical stress.

The impact of AIDS-associated wasting on quality of life: qualitative issues of measurement and evaluation

Article Abstract:

The findings from four focus groups performed on patients with AIDS-associated wasting are presented. The focus groups were undertaken using a semi-structured interview and were designed employing a model of quality of life based on symptoms and perceptions of wasting, physical, psychological, social and sexual functioning, and health perceptions. The study emphasizes conceptual and measurement concerns essential for assessing the therapeutic impact of drugs on AIDS-associated wasting.

The role of the cytokines, interferon alpha and tumor necrosis factor in the hypertriglyceridemia and wasting of AIDS

Article Abstract:

Disturbances in lipid metabolism, such as hypertriglyceridemia, are modulated by cytokines, which also mediate immune responses. Hypertriglyceridemia during infection imparts a degree of immunity to hosts because of the increase in the synthesis of lipoproteins which reduce microorganism toxicity and neutralize viruses. Although AIDS patients may suffer lipid metabolism disturbance and wasting simultaneously, there is no direct asociation between the two.
