Cranberry juice and urinary tract infections: is there a beneficial relationship?

Article Abstract:

Clinical trials are underway to determine whether cranberry juice can prevent urinary tract infections. Women have consumed cranberry juice for this purpose for years, but there was little scientific evidence of its effectiveness. One study found that a cranberry beverage given to mice reduced the ability of E. coli to adhere to epithelial cells in the urinary tract. One human study has shown that consumption of cranberry beverage reduced the incidence of urinary tract infection in a group of women.

Functional foods in the European Union

Article Abstract:

The European Union has begun several research projects to scientifically document the health aspects of functional foods. Since the 1960's, research has confirmed a link between diet and health. The focus has now shifted to foods that prevent disease rather than those that cause disease. However, scientists need to be cautious in making blanket health claims for foods because further research could invalidate these claims.
