Homocysteine and Alzheimer's disease

Article Abstract:

Research has shown that elevated blood levels of the amino acid homocysteine, to be a risk factor for vascular disease. In a recent study hyperhomocysteinemia may also play a role in the pathogenesis of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Since the 1990s, correlations have been made between plasma homocysteine concentration and brain function. In 76 patients diagnosed with AD, the mean serum homocysteine concentration was found to be significantly high than the control group.
