Introduction: should infant formulas be supplemented with bioactive components and conditionally essential nutrients present in human milk?

Article Abstract:

Infant formulas cannot exactly duplicate all the properties inherent in human milk and, thus, can be supplemented by bioactive components such as nucleotides and long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. This suggestion is most applicable to preterm infants, although their long-term use is still not recommended because of possible toxicity effects. Full-term infants, on the other hand, do not seem to need such supplementation.

Quenching the spark in the heart

Article Abstract:

A M Gomez and colleagues showed that much of the problem of heart failure has to do with a single step in heart excitation-contraction (EC) coupling, using a new high-resolution Ca2+ imaging technique. The results support a local-control, rather than 'common-pool,' theory of EC coupling.
