The multimedia curriculum package 'From Land to Landfill,' touches on different topics from varied subjects taken by middle school students. It uses the food system as its integrating theme. The educational materials trace the varied stages in food production, distribution and consumption. It highlights the scientific principles underlying the processing of food. Can't pay, won't pay

Article Abstract:

The introduction of a national minimum wage in the UK looks set to have an effect on nursing home provision. Some nursing home employees, including care assistants and domestic staff, have seen their wages rise by as much as 1 pound sterling per hour, and a survey, conducted in 1997, revealed that 13% of employees earning low pay were in the health and social work sector. Analysts believe that the enforced raising of salaries is causing serious financial difficulties for nursing homes, particularly the smaller ones, and that redundancies and closures will occur.
