LP-BM5, a murine model of acquired immunodeficiency syndrome: role of cocaine, morphine, alcohol and carotenoids in nutritional immunomodulation

Article Abstract:

The progression of LP-BM5 infection leading to immune defficiency syndrome in mice can be delayed by proper nutrition. This proves that nutrition has a significant effect on immunocompetence. The effects of cocaine, morphine, alcohol and carotenoids on murine nutrition and immunocompetence were evaluated. Morphine, cocaine and alcohol were shown to put stress on nutrition which may lead to immunosuppression. Alcohol, aside from its effect on nutrition, also had a direct effect on the immune system. Carotenoids, on the other hand, were shown to delay disease progression and lengthen survival time.

Nutrition and immunoregulation. Significance for host resistance to tumors and infectious diseases in humans and rodents

Article Abstract:

Malnutrition can lead to immunosuppression. Single-nutrient deficiencies, particularly zinc, iron, vitamins A and B-6, selenium and copper deficiencies decrease resistance to infection and tumor growth. The most frequent disorders are observed in phagocytes, cell-mediated immunity, antibody affinity, mucosal antibody secretion and the complement system. These findings on the relationship between immunity and nutrition have practical applications in designing nutritional formulas that enhance immunocompetence.

Nutrition, immunomodulation and AIDS: an overview

Article Abstract:

Immunocompetence is partly dependent on the nutritional status of individuals. Some nutrient deficiencies are known to directly reduce resistance especially in children. Nutritional level is also a significant factor in the progression of AIDS because nutritional supplements have been known to retard the progression of the disease in AIDS patients.
