Micronutrient status and aging

Article Abstract:

Aged people are recommended to take breakfast cereals, fruits and milk which provide the necessary micronutrients and blood nutrients. In general, elderly people do not achieve the Recommended Dietary Allowances (RDA), and the diets are deficient in vitamins B6, B12, D, folate, magnesium, calcium and zinc. B-vitamins are essential for metabolic reactions and their deficiency is a cause of vascular disease. Other vitamin deficiencies are responsible for cancer, heart disease and cataract.

Decreased immunity and increased morbidity in the elderly

Article Abstract:

A number of possible explanations of how decreased immunity is related to subsequent morbidity and mortality are proposed. One explanation is that old people with decreased immunity may have already been afflicted with a disease, thus their increased morbidity and mortality. Another is that depressed cellular immunity may signify an overall physiologic weakness. A third explanation is that decreased immunity lowers the body's ability to fight infection, cancer and atherosclerosis.

Nutrition and immunity in the elderly: clinical significance

Article Abstract:

Only intervention studies may provide adequate and definite answers to the question of whether a relationship exists among nutrition, immunity and infection in old age. These intervention studies can assess the impact of nutritional intervention through dietary counseling and/or supplementation on immunocompetence and susceptibility to infection. The various methods of assessing nutritional status of the elderly are also discussed.
