New approaches to the treatment of phenylketonuria

Article Abstract:

Phenylketonuria (PKU), a genetic metabolic disease, requires careful dietary planning for each patient. Diet therapy for PKU restricts animal proteins rich in phenylalanine. Other therapies include enzyme treatment and gene vectors. Phenylalanine overload should be avoided, while close attention should be paid to the ratio of calcium to phosphorus, and to vitamin B12, folic acid zinc, calcium, and iron concentrations.
