Epithelia-damaging virus infections affect vitamin A status in chickens

Article Abstract:

The specificity of the effect of Newcastle disease virus (NDV) on vitamin A metabolism was investigated. Two similar viruses, infectious bronchitis virus (IBV) and reovirus (RV) were used. IBV infection appears to lower retinol levels in plasma and liver, presumably because of increased utilization in tissues. RV infections appear to lower vitamin A status through reduced nutrient absorption, increased vitamin A utilization and possibly direct loss of nutrients. These results suggest that NDV's effect of lowering plasma retinol levels is specific.

Medium-chain triacylglycerols enhance release of cholecystokinin in chicks

Article Abstract:

A study was done on the effect of medium-chain triacylglycerols (MCT) on the release of cholecystokinin (CCK) in chicks following reports that CCK secretion is involved in the decrease of food intake in chicks fed diets containing MCT. Results show that MCT is a more potent stimulator of CCK release compared to long-chain triacylglycerols and that MCT is more easily hydrolyzed. This explains the early satiety and lesser food intake in chicks fed with MCT.
