Regulatory aspects of functional foods in Nigeria

Article Abstract:

The government of Nigeria is grappling with the regulatory problems associated with functional foods. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) is responsible for ensuring the safety of foods and drugs. Functional foods are considered drugs because their manufacturers claim they have a health benefit. However, the agency has received requests to consider some of these products as food.

The prospect for functional foods in Thailand

Article Abstract:

Like many other countries, Thailand must develop regulations covering functional food. The Thai Food and Drug Administration regulates food and drugs and a regulation covering Food for Special Dietary Use was established in 1985. However, it did not cover functional foods. Functional foods will have to be governed by safety standards because many contain added components that have physiologic activity.

Regulatory status of functional foods in Singapore

Article Abstract:

Like many countries, Singapore has few laws regulating functional foods. The Sale of Food Act does state that no food manufacturer can claim on the label that the food can prevent or cure any disease. Singapore does regulate so-called special-purpose food such as diabetic food and infant formulas. But the laws only state that any health claims must be scientifically documented.
