The safety assurance of functional foods

Article Abstract:

Many functional foods will have to undergo substantial testing before they can be marketed. Many of these foods are novel foods that have never been part of any human diet. Consequently, they must be documented to be safe for human consumption. The best way to do this is to find a common food that is equivalent. Novel foods that are substantially equivalent to a common food will need little testing. However, foods that have no equivalent must be thoroughly tested. Mycoprotein and Lactobacillus are two such products.

What scientific data are necessary?

Article Abstract:

Scientists must do their best to test functional foods for safety and efficacy. This could be difficult to do because foods are a complex mixture of nutrients, which could interact synergistically to produce health benefits. If the food has a long history of use it may not require extensive testing but individual compounds will have to be tested. This can be done through animal research, epidemiological studies and clinical trials.

Research needs for establishing the safety of functional foods

Article Abstract:

Research may be needed to find the most appropriate ways of testing functional foods. These are foods that have a health benefit as well as nutritional value. Some of these foods may be completely new and consequently will have to be thoroughly tested before they are marketed for human consumption. Although there are already many methods for testing food, new techniques may be required for testing functional foods.
