The Eastern perspective on functional foods based on traditional Chinese medicine

Article Abstract:

Functional foods have been used in traditional Chinese medicine since 1,000 B.C. Food is considered an equal partner to drugs in this system. Food is used as diet, tonic and medicine and sometimes the patient abstains from food altogether. Most functional foods are sold in liquid or powder form. The liquids include juices, soups, teas, wines and vinegar. Functional foods are most often used to prevent aging, improve appearance, control weight and blood pressure and to treat diabetes.

An Eastern perspective on nutrition and performance

Article Abstract:

Affluence in China has also brought on nutritional problems, such as overeating, excessive animal fat consumption, and obesity. A general lack of exercise and such dietary changes has increased the incidence of related diseases, while deficiency diseases are slowly declining. Integrating the benefits of ancient Chinese herbal medicine with modern nutritional science and physical activity should help optimize overall health in Asia.

Functional food in China

Article Abstract:

Scientific research should focus on determining the efficacy of traditional Chinese herbal medicine. In traditional Chinese medicine, food plays an important role in preventing and treating disease. There are about 3,000 types of functional food products in China and annual sales are estimated at $2.5 billion in US dollars. Most are of plant or animal origin. However, there is little scientific evidence to support their use.
